The
use of treated effluent (recycled sewerage water) for irrigation or industrial purposes is an excellent way to conserve Cape Town’s water supply. Find out how you can apply to use treated effluent on your commercial or industrial property.

A Well-run City: Using treated effluent is much cheaper than using drinking water.
Treated effluent can be supplied to high water users such as industry, sports fields, golf courses, large new developments, schools and construction sites.
Treated effluent can be supplied in three different ways:
- By connecting to the treated effluent pipe network;
- By hiring a metered treated effluent standpipe; or
- By collecting it directly from the wastewater treatment works.
Treated effleunt is only available in certain areas of the city and a connection to the pipe network is dependent on the location of your property and other factors. Your application will be assessed in terms of the availability of treated effluent in your area, your expected consumption and potential savings in drinking water use.
Please note
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee an uninterrupted supply of treated effluent, nor can we guarantee the quality of the treated effluent. Drinking water will still be regarded as the primary service.
How to apply
The City needs to verify the purpose of your application before approving your request for the supply of treated effluent.
Apply to be connected to the treated effluent pipe network
Step 1: Please complete the Letter of Intent, found in the document downloads section below, and include this along with your application.
The Letter of Intent requires a few specifics, including:
- Amount of treated effluent you wish to use
- Current drinking water usage
- Number of drinking water supply points, etc.
You will also need to include the following with your application:
- a copy of your or the property owner’s identity document
- a copy of a recent municipal account with the property owner’s personal details
- a clear site irrigation or plumbing plan of all water and sewer services including the best possible point where the treated effluent point should be installed (outlined in the application form)
Step 2: Once you have completed your Letter of Intent, please submit it to
treated.effluent@capetown.gov.za.
Apply to hire a metered treated effluent standpipe or collect treated effluent from a wastewater treatment works
Step 1: Please complete the Application Form for the Hire of a Treated Effluent Metered Standpipe or Collection from Wastewater Treatment Works Form.
Step 2: Submit the completed form to
treated.effluent@capetown.gov.za.
